  • Bijective BWT (6 Comments)

David Scott has written a bijective BWT transform, which brings all the advantages of bijectiveness to BWT based compressors. Among other things, making BWT more suitable for compression-before-encryption and also give (slightly) better compression.

  • Asymmetric Binary System (113 Comments)

Jarek Duda’s “Asymmetric Binary System” promises to be an alternate to arithmetic coding, having all the advantages, but being much simpler. Matt has coded a PAQ based compressor using ABS for back-end encoding. Update: Andrew Polar has written an alternate implementation of ABS.

  • Precomp: More Compression for your Compressed Files (3 Comments)

So many of today’s files are already compressed (using old, outdated algorithms) that newer algorithms don’t even get a chance to touch them. Christian Schneider’s Precomp comes to rescue by undoing the harm.

  • On2 Technologies is Hiring

There aren’t too many companies working on cutting edge codecs, and of those few this one is hiring. Best of luck.

  • China’s AVS Specifications Available (2 Comments)

Its old news that China has developed their own Advanced Video Standard to avoid high licensing fees. English translation of the standard is now available, along with the IPR policy. Finally something technical that you can get your hands on to feed your appetite.

Intelligent Design From Information Theory?

Posted by Mark Nelson on 17th August 2005 | Permanent Link

Yes, I’d like somebody to listen to this radio show and let me know just how George Gilder manages to use Information Theory in support of Intelligent Design, as promised in the teaser. Somehow I’m suspicious that the term is being used in a very loose sense, but who knows?

Considering that it is ultimately a matter of faith and not science, it seems kind of foolish to have a debate on the topic, but Richard Dawkins will gladly wade into this one any chance he gets.

But Gilder is completely full of nonsense. Information Theory has nothing to do with cosmogony, really.

  2. Krisjohn Says:

I can see why no reputable scientist wanted to debate this twit. I think he’s claiming that it’s impossible for DNA to mutate spontaneously because it contains “too much” information. He claims that information theory “proves” this assertion.

He also uses the same tired old junk about how an eye is too complicated to have evolved.

I think also, as the host notices, he doesn’t understand what the human genome project is.

Ultimately I think Gilder doesn’t understand the difference between compression and a hash. This mis-understanding may well be the basis of his claims that information theory proves the point of “intelligent design”.

  3. Krisjohn Says:

Oo, and he pulls out Hilter! I think the rules of the game are that you lose as soon as you invoke Hilter.

Well, you’re right about that! But like a lot of guys, he manages to make a living out of his hot air. I can’t help but be envious of that part.
