Big Bucks Rolling In

The PR department of UCSD is busy pounding their collective chest over a package of NSF grants landed by Information Theory researchers at their campus. I was interested to see that a tidy chunk of change was allocated for some work we might be interested in:
Professor Alon Orlitsky, who holds a joint appointment in ECE and the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, will study “Predicting the Unlikely: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications.” His $262,974 award will fund research on so-called large-alphabet probability problems (such as language modeling for compression, speech recognition and data mining) where the number of possible outcomes is large compared to the size of the observed data sample.
Well done, Orlitsky! Obviously the man knows how to write a proposal, perhaps we should see if he can scrounge up some dough for an upgrade to our web site?
