No Unified DVD Format

Reuters is reporting that Sony and Toshiba have apparently given up efforts to develop a unified format for next-generation DVDs. The two companies had opened up negotiations but they fell through due to time constraints on new products from both groups.
There is Slashdot discussion on this too. As expected, no one is happy by this. Some speculate, or rather “hope”, that one of the two will die soon. But many also feel that it wont have too much of an impact and that both formats will live happily ever after.
There are also reports of no standard codec being decided to be used on these DVDs.
