David Scott has written a bijective BWT transform, which brings all the advantages of bijectiveness to BWT based compressors. Among other things, making BWT more suitable for compression-before-encryption and also give (slightly) better compression.

  • Asymmetric Binary System (113 Comments)

Jarek Duda’s “Asymmetric Binary System” promises to be an alternate to arithmetic coding, having all the advantages, but being much simpler. Matt has coded a PAQ based compressor using ABS for back-end encoding. Update: Andrew Polar has written an alternate implementation of ABS.

  • Precomp: More Compression for your Compressed Files (3 Comments)

So many of today’s files are already compressed (using old, outdated algorithms) that newer algorithms don’t even get a chance to touch them. Christian Schneider’s Precomp comes to rescue by undoing the harm.

Sorenson releases Squeeze 4.3 update

Press Release: Sorenson Media released Squeeze 4.3, an update to its cross-platform video compression suite that brings new tools to enhance and support multimedia creation using Macromedia Flash. Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 furnishes users with a new freely distributable cross-platform FLV player for easy playback and preview of FLV files. In addition, this version offers alpha channel support for blue-screen type special effects as well as embedded cue points and global metadata options. The cue points and metadata have the ability to make Flash video more robust with data that makes Flash video more searchable and more accessible. Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 Compression Suite costs $450 and Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 for Macromedia Flash costs $120.

Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 also offers plug-in support for On2 Technology’s VP6 Pro video codec. With two-pass Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoding for Flash, this optional Sorenson plug-in provides video quality comparable to today’s best video codecs, but at a much smaller file size. The combination of 2-Pass VBR and cue points makes Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 the only video compression product to offer both features in one application.

In addition, Squeeze 4.3 offers new Flash player templates. With these new templates, users have the necessary tools for adding a custom look and feel to a Flash player. The templates come with easy-to-follow documentation to guide users as they create their own customized Flash video player controls.

“We are extremely pleased with the latest release of Sorenson Squeeze 4.3,” said Matt Cupal, president and COO of Sorenson Media. “It leverages our best-in-class video encoding to enable both professional and enthusiast alike to encode the highest quality video with the simplest workflow. Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 combines the ease of previewing, managing and delivering Flash video content with the ability to now add metadata and cue points to Flash. Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 makes Flash video more valuable to users than ever before.”

The professional version of the On2 VP6 plug-for both versions of Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 is available for $200. Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 is a free upgrade to owners of Squeeze 4.0 or later.
