David Scott has written a bijective BWT transform, which brings all the advantages of bijectiveness to BWT based compressors. Among other things, making BWT more suitable for compression-before-encryption and also give (slightly) better compression.

  • Asymmetric Binary System (116 Comments)

Jarek Duda’s “Asymmetric Binary System” promises to be an alternate to arithmetic coding, having all the advantages, but being much simpler. Matt has coded a PAQ based compressor using ABS for back-end encoding. Update: Andrew Polar has written an alternate implementation of ABS.

  • Precomp: More Compression for your Compressed Files (3 Comments)

So many of today’s files are already compressed (using old, outdated algorithms) that newer algorithms don’t even get a chance to touch them. Christian Schneider’s Precomp comes to rescue by undoing the harm.

China’s CTTnet incorporates On2’s VP7 video compression technology for mobile phones

Press Release: On2 Technologies, Inc. and China Transport Telecommunications Broadband Network Service Co. Ltd. (CTTnet) announced that they have made significant progress in the development and deployment throughout China of a broad range of mobile streaming applications based on On2’s TrueMotion VP7 Technology. CTTnet has begun the process of seeking approval for the VP7 mobile technology from Chinese mobile carriers, and initial response from the carriers has been positive. On2 will be demonstrating VP7 operating on a number of mobile platforms at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

The parties also stated that the previously announced agreement between On2 and Beijing Fastrend Technology Ltd. has been revised, with CTTnet replacing Fastrend as a party to the agreement. On2 and CTTnet stated that they have achieved significant technical milestones in integrating VP7 on the Symbian(TM) and Smartphone mobile operating systems and PDA platforms, and currently have VP7 operating on four Symbian, and more than ten Smartphone models and several PDA models.

The VP7 Symbian player should be available for commercial release during the first quarter of 2006. On2 and CTTnet have begun the work necessary to commence a VP7 implementation on the Brew mobile within the first quarter of 2006 and have continued planning for future implementations on additional mobile operating systems.

On2 has granted CTTnet certain exclusive marketing rights relating to VP7 for mobile applications.

Update: On2 blog has a post on this.
