David Scott has written a bijective BWT transform, which brings all the advantages of bijectiveness to BWT based compressors. Among other things, making BWT more suitable for compression-before-encryption and also give (slightly) better compression.

Jarek Duda’s “Asymmetric Binary System” promises to be an alternate to arithmetic coding, having all the advantages, but being much simpler. Matt has coded a PAQ based compressor using ABS for back-end encoding. Update: Andrew Polar has written an alternate implementation of ABS.

So many of today’s files are already compressed (using old, outdated algorithms) that newer algorithms don’t even get a chance to touch them. Christian Schneider’s Precomp comes to rescue by undoing the harm.

ER Mapper releases new easy-to-use Image Mosaic and Compression Software

Posted by Sachin Garg on 19th February 2006 | Permanent Link

Press Release: Responding to the widespread demand for a specialized geospatial image mosaic and compression software application, ER Mapper has released ER Mapper Mosaic-Balance-Compress (MBC). Retailing for US$1000, ER Mapper MBC provides a simple interface so even a novice user can create high-value compressed image mosaics.

Using ER Mapper’s acclaimed mosaicking and colour balancing technology, MBC turns a collection of image tiles into a single compressed image mosaic. The mosaic allows an uninterrupted view of an entire land area without having to traverse hundreds of smaller image tiles. The image mosaic can be used easily in any GIS, CAD, desktop or web application.

The image compression technology in ER Mapper MBC will come as a huge relief to those organizations with a fast growing image library. ER Mapper MBC can compress images to just 5% of the original size without any visual difference in the imagery. For example, 10GB of source data would become just 500mb – small enough to fit on a CD.

The mosaic can be compressed using ER Mapper’s industry standard ECW, or the emerging ISO standard JPEG 2000, image formats.

Not only does compression benefit the storage and portability of image assets, it also increases the ease and efficiency in which they can be used. ECW and JPEG 2000 images are faster to load, and easier to manage and use in desktop and web applications than the original source files.

And, for professionals such as Remote Sensors that need pixel-for-pixel fidelity if they are to use compressed images, ER Mapper MBC can use compression algorithms that keep the underlying mathematical information within the image intact. This means that the file is identical to the original uncompressed source file, but 25% of the size.

Mr. Chris Ribbel, President ER Mapper Americas said, “ER Mapper MBC is quite specific in its application of Mosaicking, Balancing and Compressing geospatial images. However, this new product supports a very broad range of users, which is anyone wishing to mosaic a few tiles together or extract a subset of a large mosaic.”
