Chinese delegates call for more support for China’s Audio and Video Coding Standard (AVS).

ChinaTechNews: Professor Chen Junliang from Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications have united with ten others who are attending the CPPCC and submitted the proposal that suggests the State Administration of Film, Radio and Television and the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) work out guidelines to make AVS a recommended national standard.
The group hope that companies can adopt AVS in multimedia fields, and priorities should be given to government-supported projects.
In addition, they also appeal for the National Reform and Development Commission and MII to adopt some preferential stimulus policies for the benefit of AVS implementation.
AVS is a digital audio and video de-coding standard developed by China. Source coding technology mainly focuses on mass video and audio (original data and sources) compression technology, also known as digital video and audio coding technology.
An AVS Workgroup was authorized and established by Science and Technology Department under the National Information Industry Ministry in June, 2002. In order to meet the requirement of information industry and realize the union of the native enterprises and research institutions, the role of the group is to establish such general technical standards as the compression, decoding, processing, and the representation of digital audio-video and meanwhile provide the digital audio-video equipments and systems with high-efficient and economic coding/decoding technologies.
