I can add another couple of links for open source programs that are even better, not significantly by few percent, but better anyway.
The reason of not hiring good professionals is in new form of communism that is developing in United States, which most of Americans don't understand. The owner of the company owns money and free to hire anyone but hiring manager is not the owner and should act in the best interests of the company. But he or she is acting in his or hers interests instead. I was born and grew up in Russia during socialism and worked in large and small companies in US. I can tell for sure that big corporations functioning in the same way as large government factories in former Soviet Union. Even CEO is not the owner because there are investors. Investors don't understand details and perform control on very generic level like Political Buro of communist party in former Soviet Union.
I can give you model of real free enterprise system. Imagine that employee named Bob came to his boss and said that he is diagnosed with cancer and has only 3 months to leave. If his boss say: thank you Bob for notifying me please make sure you finish all your projects, I will immediately notify HR to star looking a new specialist. If that happens that is great. I wish to leave in such state. When I had my first job in big corporation in US one of employees named Bob had a stroke, when he returned back to work his speech was slow. Director of programming instructed everyone not to pay attention and help Bob as much as we can. How nice. Unfortunately it is called corruption. By doing good for Bob they deny opportunity for another strong professional and that happened because director of programming did not pay Bob his own money because that happened in United Socialist States of America.

When I retired from Echo range at China Lake in California. A friend of mine asked if I want to work with him in Palmdale. He knew what kind of programmer I was based on work in common at Echo range. He asked if I would apply for a job where one of the managers under him had some openings. I had the interview with his guy he too questioned my amount of experience and said there was lots of tough competition.
A day later I talked to my friend who was unhappy with this guy for not hiring me. He stated I could have the job if I wanted it. He said the man who interviewed my thought I was to old to fat and had no business trying to get a job. I turned that job down and no I did not sue. The problem is that you may be old or of the wrong race to fell some quota or not a team player. Having the ability to write great code or fix and debug code that is have problems is not really valued very much by young managers who have no clue what is good themselves. Another possibility is fear that your to good and could take his job.

I was doing recently data compression research and found that SIF format can be easy approached and even beaten by 500 lines C program. The details can be seen in http://ezcodesample.com/rolz/rolz_article.html
My exercise with data compression did not impress Stuffit because my resume was rejected on recently advertised position of C++ programmer on the reason of too short C++ experience (which was about 20 years). I have a job, I'm not angry with them. I only curious on which rate I have to beat their record in order to be considered seriously for the positions that they advertised.

Uh, "http://www.stuffitimage.com/" just points to the more than a year old JPEG compression page.

Not that I disagree with the potential. I'm just disappointed in the lack of implementaiton.
