Reuters: In a litigation currently pending in the Mannheim District Court, SanDisk is showing that its MP3 players operate a technology which is completely different from a certain audio data transmission and reception techniques that has been patented for Philips and others many years ago.
Sandisk is arguing that it’s mp3 processing technology differs significantly from the patents which Sisvel (the MP3 patent pool) are attempting to enforce.
Now these are patents which almost everyone working with MP3 has routinely licensed and if SanDisk feels they have worked around all of them, this is big. If they manage to prove in court that is actually the case, this could be even bigger. Final ruling is expected in spring next year.
