    David Scott has written a bijective BWT transform, which brings all the advantages of bijectiveness to BWT based compressors. Among other things, making BWT more suitable for compression-before-encryption and also give (slightly) better compression.

    Jarek Duda’s “Asymmetric Binary System” promises to be an alternate to arithmetic coding, having all the advantages, but being much simpler. Matt has coded a PAQ based compressor using ABS for back-end encoding. Update: Andrew Polar has written an alternate implementation of ABS.

    Its old news that China has developed their own Advanced Video Standard to avoid high licensing fees. English translation of the standard is now available, along with the IPR policy. Finally something technical that you can get your hands on to feed your appetite.

Wireless Comes to GSPx 2005

Global Technology Conferences announced three wireless tutorials for GSPx 2005. The tutorials will cover WiMAX, ZigBee, UWB and Wireless LAN. GSPx, the signal processing conference and expo, will take place October 24-27 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in California.

ATIS IIF To Develop Reference Framework for IPTV

ATIS announced in June the formation of the IPTV Interoperability Forum (IIF) to develop ATIS standards and related technical and operations activities that will foster interoperability, interconnection and implementation of IPTV systems and services, including video on demand and interactive TV services. It will focus on various elements, such as QoS, DRM, encoders, decoders, STBs, DSLAMs and VoD systems.

No Unified DVD Format

Reuters is reporting Sony and Toshiba have apparently given up efforts to develop a unified format for next-generation DVDs. The two companies had opened up negotiations but they fell through due to time constraints on new products from both groups.
