HP’s Susie Wee gives some insight on newly approved Part-8 of Jpeg2000 standard which deals with, among other things, intelligent encryption of Jpeg 2000 files. Susie has been working on media security for scalable media for some years now, and is a co-editor of the JPSEC standard.

MS WMPhoto Renamed HDPhoto, Officially Released

Microsoft has renamed its new image format as HDPhoto (earlier called WMPhoto), and licensing terms have been revised. Version 1.0 of device porting kit is now available.

Microsoft’s HD Photo not better than Jpeg 2000?

A report by MSU concludes that “some one-year old implementations of JPEG 2000 significantly outperform WMPhoto in objective and subjective comparison”. But this is NOT the final word. Bill Crow, program manager for Windows Media Photo, gives an interesting review of this comparison.

JPEG’s Reply to Microsoft WMP: Better JPEG?

The new ITU extension to JPEG offers better (and faster) compression by introducing a new (backward incompatible) alternative Q15 arithmetic coding. Color precision is increased to maximum 16 bits per color component.
